It’s the last week of Mushroom Mania, and this week I decided to visit Simpatico Bar Bistro in Paddington.

Simpatico is located on Given Terrace near the corner of Latrobe Terrace, in bustling Paddington, and is just the place to catch up with friends after shopping at the  trendy boutiques and visiting the galleries in the area.

When we arrived we were quickly shown to our table and provided with a menu each to peruse.  The menus cover both the food and drinks available, which I think is a great idea.  The menu is laid out with a section for starters, dishes to share, mains and desserts.  Our waiter explained that people commonly order 2 to 3 share dishes or main courses.

To start with we ordered cocktails.  My fiancé ordered a whisky sour ($14) and I ordered the Basil Grande ($14) based on the suggestion of our waiter.  The Basil Grande was an intriguing mix of muddled strawberries, balsamic vinegar, basil and freshly ground pepper.  On first taste  the sweetness of the strawberries comes through followed by the basil and pepper.  At first I quite liked it, as it was something quite different, but after a while the spiciness of the pepper started to affect me and the basil began to make me feel I was drinking a salad.

The Whiskey Sour was deliciously tart, and a very generous serving, however it included egg white.  Some bars seem to include egg white in their Whiskey Sour, others don’t, and while my fiancé usually remembers to ask for it to be left out on this occasion he forgot.

On to our meals, I ordered the double baked porcini & gruyere soufflé ($20) from the sharing menu and my fiance ordered the beef eye fillet with wild mushroom bread & butter pudding, watercress & confit garlic ($33).  The soufflé was deliciously light and airy and the porcini and gruyère worked well together with neither overpowering each other.  The soufflé was then topped off with a hint of truffle oil.

My fiancé ordered the fillet medium, however it arrived medium well.  The mushroom bread and butter pudding though was light and surprisingly delicious and without the stodginess you normally expect with bread and butter pudding.

We decided to try the dessert menu.  I opted for the dark chocolate tart with poached baby pear and orange syllabub ($11) and my fiance ordered the vanilla bean panna cotta with strawberries, jelly & strawberry chard ($11).  The panna cotta was deliciously wobbly and light and was topped with vanilla seeds and surrounded by strawberries and jelly.

The dark chocolate tart was served as a generous slice and accompanying it was cute baby poached pear and orange cream.  The tart though, was disappointing.  It was more milk chocolate than dark and I missed that intense chocolate kick.  It was also served cold from the refrigerator, I prefer chocolate tarts served at room temperature, or even slightly warm, as I think this allows the chocolate flavours to be best enjoyed.

Simpatico was busy during our visit, which resulted in a wait of over 30 minutes for our mains, but our desserts arrived promptly.  While I enjoyed our visit to Simpatico – the staff were friendly and portions generous – I found things a little hit and miss, although some of that was down to personal taste.
