A good stand mixer is the workhorse of any bakers kitchen.
I remember back in school when we had to whisk egg whites by hand. Ugh! Cream, mix, knead, whisk and beat a good mixer takes the hard work out of these tasks. As much as I love getting hands on in the kitchen, I also love appliances that save my arms from these manual tasks.
I was recently sent the new Sunbeam Zumbo Limited Edition Food Processor and Kitchen Mixer to road test, and having been a long time KitchenAid user I was keen to see how the Sunbeam appliances stack up.
I shared my review of the Sunbeam Zumbo Limited Edition Food Processor here, and today I’m sharing my thoughts on the mixer…..and one very lucky reader has the chance to win one of their very own!!!
Appearance and Design
One of the reasons I think the KitchenAid Mixer became so popular is the vast array of colours that it comes in. My KitchenAid Mixer is a beautiful cherry red, my favourite colour, and has been a faithful companion over the years!
The Sunbeam Limited Edition Zumbo mixer comes in three colours. Vanilla white, Pink Marshmellow and Magenta. I opted for Pink Marshmellow and it is such a pretty colour! I honestly wasn’t sure what I’d think of it in person, as I’m not a pink person, but it is so cute!!
Coupled with the frosted zigzag pattern on the bowl it is a beautiful appliance that I’m happy to keep out on my kitchen bench.
The bowl that comes with the Sunbeam mixer is lighter than the KitchenAid bowl. This is really handy if you make a large cake when it comes to pouring it into your cake tin.
So appearances aside, the Sunbeam has a few design features I really love.
- The push button head release which can be operated with one hand.
- A scraper whisk, which comes with plastic scrapers attached to ensure absolutely everything in the bowl is whisked evenly.
- It comes with a Scrapemaster spatula beater. I remember when I bought a similar version of one of these for my KitchenAid (it doesn’t come with by default) and it made such a difference. No need to scrape the bowl down continuously!
- It comes with a pasta roller!!! I love that this is included. Again, this is something I purchased separately for my KitchenAid.
All kitchen mixers function similarly and offer the same blades, so functionality wise they are very similar. However, the Sunbeam has a few functions and features that I find particularly useful.
Firstly, the push button pause button. There’s no need to flick a switch to turn your mixer off. Simply push the pause button (very handy if you’ve got messy hands) and the machine stops instantly. To start it again simply push the button again. Simple!
Secondly, the Sunbeam Mixer comes with an inbuilt timer. Firstly, the timer keeps track of how long you’ve been using the mixer. The feature I really love though is the count-down timer! I was forever setting a timer on my phone to time kneading with my KitchenAid. The Sunbeam includes an inbuilt timer that will stop the mixer when time is up. How handy is that?
The twist dial is another great feature, which easily enables you to increase or decrease the speed of the mixer.
The stainless steel mixing bowl, beater and dough hook are dishwasher safe although Sunbeam recommend that all attachments are washed with warm soapy water. In particular, the plastic attachments as plastic deteriorates with prolonged dishwasher use.
Given my KitchenAid mixer is 6 years old it is probably a little unfair to give a verdict on which one I prefer as I’m not comparing current model to current model. I have to admit I do have a soft spot for my KitchenAid mixer, mainly due to the colour. However, featurewise given the choice between my old KitchenAid and the new Sunbeam I’d pick the Sunbeam.
The Sunbeam offers the best value for money. The KitchenAid retails for $879 in Australia, while the Sunbeam retails for $599 and it comes with scraper blades and a pasta roller attachment, which need to be purchased separately for the KitchenAid.
